AboutJustin Bland, trumpet, received his Bachelors of Music in Trumpet Performance from the University of Maryland, where he studied with Chris Gekker and Steven Hendrickson. He is now a Masters student at Case Western Reserve University pursuing a degree in Early Music Performance Practices. He currently studies baroque trumpet with Barry Bauguess and voice with Ellen Hargis. Before coming to college, Mr. Bland was principal trumpeter in the DC Youth Orchestra, where he had the opportunity to tour Japan as a trumpet soloist. He was also second trumpet with the Prince George’s Philharmonic. In May 2007, he was awarded the Presser Foundation Scholarship, a scholarship given to the outstanding junior in the School of Music at the University of Maryland. Justin was also a prize winner in the 2007 Mary Graham Lasley Scholarship Competition. Mr. Bland is an avid supporter of early music; in addition to his numerous performances of early literature on modern instruments, including a recent performance as a soloist for the Tartini “Trumpet” Concerto with the Firelands Symphony Orchestra, Justin performs early music on period instruments. At Case Western, he plays baroque trumpet with the baroque orchestra, plays recorder and cornetto with the collegium, and sings with the early music singers. Justin has won first prize in multiple historical instruments divisions of the National Trumpet Competition, and he has had the opportunity to perform concerts on period instruments with the Washington Bach Consort, the Orchestra of the 17th Century, the Washington Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble, Chantry, and Apollo’s Fire (where he sings as well). He is also a countertenor in the chamber choir at Trinity Cathedral in Cleveland.
